Many summers for Adolph and Esther Gottlieb were spent by the water, going sailing or lounging at the beach. From the 1930s through the mid 1950s this meant in Massachusetts, either on Cape Ann or in Provincetown. Each summer they would live alongside many other vacationing artists and had quite a lively and exciting community in which to work and play. Adolph Gottlieb was able to paint, sail, and participate in artist-organized events such as Forum 49, an important summer-long series of artist talks, exhibitions, and events that he helped to organize in Provincetown in the summer of 1949.
In the late 50s and early 60s, the Gottliebs began to spend their summers in East Hampton, which was a little closer to their home base in New York City. There, they would eventually purchase a summer home, where they continued to sail and entertain guests together, and where Adolph Gottlieb built a painting studio.
